Over the years, there have been many football shirts released. Some are obviously more memorable than others, but this article has compiled a list of the top 10 worst ever football shirts. Most soccer jerseys these days are very well designed, but there were times in the past when it looked as though the designers went out of their way to make footballers look ridiculous. The 1990s appears to have the biggest collection of really bad shirts, but there is one shirt in this article from as recent as this season. This list is my opinion only, but I’m sure that many of you will agree with most of these choices. They start at number 10 and get progressively worse as the article goes on. Enjoy!
10. Chelsea Away Shirt (1995)
The 1995 Chelsea away shirt turned a few heads when it was released, but certainly not in a positive manner. Some have said that the shirt is like a stretch of tarmac with a pedestrian crossing at the top of it, which is not the most flattering. Grey shirts have rarely worked well for clubs (just ask Man Utd fans about that day at Southampton) and Chelsea did not break the mould in that sense.
9. Sierra Leone Home Shirt (2010-11)
This shirt is very unusual for a football shirt nowadays and looks more like something from the 1990s. Hummel have certainly pulled out all the stop to make this eye-catching (or do I mean an eyesore?) and the results are not good. There is just too much going on with the shirt and even the attempt to copy Puma’s idea of having a representative animal of the country on the shirt does not redeem this really poor effort.
8. Ajax Away Shirt (1989-90)
Do your eyes hurt yet? The red, white and blue joining boxes on this Ajax away shirt also give you a sore head if you stare at it too long. This design even extends to both sleeves and makes for a horrible looking shirt. You do feel that the blue design with the white pinstripes that is overshadowed by this overall design would have made for a very smart shirt if Umbro had just kept it simple.
7. Athletic Bilbao Home Shirt (2004)
I wonder if the two players who modelled these shirts put in a quick transfer request after they found out what they would have to wear in the upcoming season. When a team releases a centenary shirt, this should be one of the best designs, so that it is a memorable one. Unfortunately, it is memorable for all the wrong reasons and I bet the local artist that was employed to design this was never asked to do so again!
6. Huddersfield Town Away Shirt (1993)
Once again, if this had been kept as a simple design of a red shirt with white pinstripes, this would be a nice design. The black stripe with the sponsor is even a nice feature, but then if you look on the left hand side, the design is absolutely horrible! It looks as though wallpaper has been scraped off to reveal a flowery design underneath.
5. Hull City Home Shirt (1992-93)
Hull City are nicknamed The Tigers and from the looks of this shirt, they have taken the name too literally. Hull City were in lower league football at this point and their fans will have been happy that by the time they reached the heights of the English Premier League, that this particularly design was long gone and was replaced with something more stylish.
4. Bochum Home Shirt (1997-98)
Bochum tried a little too hard to come up with a unique design for their 1992-93 home shirt. The right hand side of the shirt is blue, but it’s the left hand side of the shirt that really lets the whole design down. The rainbow effect simply does not work here and should never be repeated.
3. Australia Home Shirt (1990)
Australia have produced some very nice football shirts in recent years, but 1990 certainly wasn’t one of them. This shirt has no style at all and looks like a poor painting, where the artist has just decided to paint randomly all over it. I honestly couldn’t imagine the most passionate Australian fans buying this shirt.
2. Scunthorpe United Shirt (1994)
Scunthorpe United released this shocker of a shirt in 1994. Before we get to the ridiculous design, the fact that this shirt was sponsored by Pleasure Island just adds more weight to how much of an embarrasment this is. Many people like to buy a Pick N’ Mix, but not when they’ve to wear it! The fact that this hasn’t made it to number 1 just shows you how bad the following shirt is.
1. Colorado Caribous Shirt (1978)
And here is your winner (or loser, depending on how you look at it). Colorado Caribous only lasted for one season in the NASL and although it was not because of this montrosity, you wouldn’t be surprised either. Not only is this shirt really poor in design, it is finished off with tassles (yes, I did say tassles!) around the centre of the shirt. It looks more like something that would be worn at a rodeo than on a football pitch and for me, it definitely is the worst football shirt ever made so far.
What do you think of this list?
